New details have emerged regarding the arrest of a 17-year-old from McKinney, who federal agents say was plotting to assassinate Texas Representative Keith Self. The teenager was taken into custody by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on October 5. While the individual’s identity remains withheld as the probe continues, the incident has heightened security protocols for the congressman, who is currently seeking a third term in office for Texas’ third congressional district.

Rep. Self’s campaign team learned of the detention through the U.S. Capitol Police on October 6. Officials stated that investigators believed the teen had been radicalized and was under federal surveillance. According to the campaign, agents indicated the suspect was planning a terrorist operation on behalf of the Islamic State. The primary target was reportedly a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17, an event expected to draw former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. The FBI Dallas office has not yet responded to requests for further comment on the specifics of the case.

Upon receiving the news, Rep. Self stated that his team increased their situational awareness, though he noted he already maintained a robust security detail. Drawing on his background in military combat zones, the lawmaker described his reaction as calm rather than panicked. He explained that his primary concern was determining whether the suspect was operating as a lone wolf. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, was also briefed on the potential risks, and the family took the threat seriously without letting it disrupt their daily routines.

The congressman noted that while he has received threats in the past, none had previously resulted in an arrest. He acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, recognizing that the incident could have escalated into a major event based on the information provided by investigators. Despite the allegations, Self attended the October 17 fundraiser as planned, where he judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. He reported that the event proceeded smoothly without any incidents.

Rep. Self has continued his campaigning schedule, including morning poll-greeting sessions, stating that the plot will not deter him from alerting voters to what he views as a significant political ideology. His recent legislative activity includes introducing a nonbinding resolution in September to denounce Sharia law and affirm the supremacy of the U.S. Constitution. This stance aligns with local tensions in his district, where the McKinney City Council recently approved expansion plans for a local mosque following contentious public debate and a subsequent effort to recall several council members.

The arrest has also drawn attention from the political opposition. Evan Hunt, Self’s challenger in the upcoming midterm election, condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. As early voting continues across the state, the focus remains on the investigation and the security measures in place for the remainder of the campaign season.
